If you are studying on a degree course to be a health care professional your funding will come from the NHS and the government.
Your support will consist of:
NB: The information below applies to those starting their course from September 2007 onwards. However the rates are based on 2006 amounts and increase slightly each year.
The NHS will pay your full fees each year.
You will receive a reduced rate student loan each year. This will be 50% of a full student loan.
The amount of bursary you receive will be directly dependent on your income and/or that of your partner or your parents.
If you are married, have children, have supported yourself for 3 years or are estranged from your parents, you are classed as an independent student. In this case the means test is done on your income or that of you and your partner. If not you are considered dependent, then the income of your parent’s household is assessed.
The basic rates for the bursary for 2007/8 are:
Existing students:
New students:
If your parents or spouse earn less than £22, 561 you will receive the full bursary.
If they earn £45, 000 you will not receive any bursary.
For every week you study over 30 weeks you receive extra money:
Living at home £52
Living away from home £78
If you have to attend the course for 45 weeks or more in any academic year , you will get an allowance for all 52 weeks of the year.
Any extra travel expenses that you incur travelling to and from your placements will be re-imbursed.
If you have to stay away from home for your placement then extra accommodation costs will also be re-imbursed.
On top of the standard bursary certain students will receive extra allowances:
£2, 510 for spouse or first child and additional allowances for subsequent children.
The amount you receive is dependent on your income and that of your partner.
Costs incurred, maximum of:
Under 21 at start of course, up to £100 p/w allowance during longest vacation
The university sends a list of all students who have accepted places on the Diploma course to the NHS grants unit who will then send you an application form for the bursary and additional allowances. They will send you a new form at the beginning of each year provided you stay on the course.
Placement costs are reimbursed so you have to keep all your receipts to claim the money back.
