Recent changes to the staff structure in the Student Activities department have allowed us to better support our 210 Student Activity groups. With specialist staff working with each group we are assisting them to develop and grow, provide value for money for their members and to give something back to the Union. With 12,000 members engaged in clubs and societies it has been great to see all their potential realised over the past year.

Pride week in May 2006 saw the Union celebrate what our Student Activities programme means to our members and reward the positive effect their hard work and commitment has on campus, in Leeds and beyond. The week of events climaxed with the ‘Rileys Awards Show’ attended by 200 people including Pro Vice Chancellor, Alan Pearman. Awards were presented to the groups who contributed most to the Union.

This year saw the second annual Varsity sports competition between the University of Leeds and Leeds Metropolitan University involving 20 of our sports teams. Leeds Metropolitan University won the overall competition and the day’s highlight was the Men’s Rugby Union match in front of a crowd of over 4,000 students at Headingley stadium which our team won.

With so many successful teams and individuals already involved in Student Activities, we have turned to these existing involved members and groups to help attract more people to our activities programme.

The ‘Give it a Go’ scheme is a prime example of how this method of engagement has manifested itself. The scheme allows members to try out new activities without the commitment of joining a society or sports club. Many Student Activity groups contribute their own time

and resources to help run these taster sessions, which has resulted in a 25% increase in activities offered by the ‘Give it a Go’ programme, and will in the long term, attract new members to take part in further Student Activities.

We have also increased the amount of communication and access to information available for our members - from specific group information on the website and on every notice-board, to delivering ‘Give it a Go’ advertising into the community around Hyde Park and Headingley, as well as using social networking websites to communicate directly with our members.

Volunteer groups have clocked up 17,000 hours of volunteer time...
Our award winning media groups are still producing work in print, radio and television giving members the opportunity to develop skills required to work in these industries.

Volunteer groups have clocked up 17,000 hours of volunteer time in 2006 working on community projects, with groups of all ages and needs, and raising £147,000 in funds for charity.

Action Coordinator, Anthony Coward relishes the challenge of organising so many volunteers to go into the community and represent Leeds University Union.

“...bridging the gap between students and the community so both can understand and appreciate each other.”

“I looked into joining Action in my second year, initially for something extra to put on my CV” he comments “only expecting to help out on a few sessions and nothing more. But once I started I found I got so much satisfaction out of meeting and working with new people and finding out about their lives. Almost two years later I am coordinating over 1,000 volunteers and countless projects giving myself and all the team skills for when we leave University.
I like seeing how Action and Leeds University Union are bridging the gap between students and the community so both can understand and appreciate each other.”

We count ourselves very lucky to have such a passionate, active and vibrant student body which can only be improved.
