Changes have been announced for the funding arrangements for students starting in the academic year 2008/09:

• The income threshold for students receiving the full maintenance grant is rising from £17 500 to £25 000. This means students on a full time course with a family income of £25 000 or less will receive the full grant.
• The income threshold for partial grants is rising from around £40 000 to £60 000. This means all full time students with family incomes of up to £60 000 will receive a partial grant.
• Increased choice in the way the student loan is repaid including the option of a 'repayment holiday' for up to five years at any time the student wishes.

NB: Students starting in 2008/09 who have already studied at University previously will be assessed using the income thresholds for continuing students unless they are studying on certain courses including PGCE's, social work and medicine.

These changes mean that two thirds of students are expected to receive a grant in 2008 compared to just over half currently.

These arrangements are also in place for students who are eligible to start in 2007 and defer entry.
