How do I change or leave my course?

Changing Courses

If it is early in the year, and you have a clear idea of the course that you want to transfer to then the procedure is quite simple.

  • You need to speak to your department and get permission to be released from your course.
  • You then need to arrange with your new department to be accepted for transfer. There is no guarantee that you will be accepted - you will need to make sure that you meet the entry requirements for the new course and you will need to explain why you want to transfer.
  • They then need to fill in the transfer form which their department will provide and the arrangements will be made.
  • There are deadlines after which you cannot transfer - in this case you may need to take time out.

Information about changing courses and the deadlines is in the taught student guide.

Leaving University

If you want to leave university permanently the procedure is simple.

  • You just need to fill in a leaver’s form that you can get from your department.

If there is any chance that you may wish to return to Higher Education you need to ensure your LEA is aware of this.

Read about the financial implications of course changes.

Can I get my work re-marked?

It is not normally possible to get work re-marked.  You can write to your head of school and ask, but most departments will not consider re-marking work.

If the department will not consider this, and you want to formally request re-marking, you will need to use the Academic Appeals procedure. The appeals procedure is lengthy and you will need to show a strong case. Seek advice on appealing from the Student Advice Centre before deciding whether to appeal.

What do I do if I have problems that affect my course?

If you experienced any medical, personal or course difficulties that you believe have affected your performance in any assessments, it is very important to let your parent department and any elective departments know as soon as possible.

Once aware of your circumstances, your department may be able to take your difficulties into account when finalising your marks, deciding your classification or assessing what resit rights you have.

Do I need to pay council tax?

Normally as a full time student you do not have to pay council tax.  The exception to this would be if you own your home.

If you live in Leeds or Wakefield and you receive a bill you can get a form from the Student Advice Centre which you need to send to the council. This will prompt them to check your student status. If you live in a different area you can get an exemption certificate from Central Student Administration.

If you are a temporary leaver you should not pay council tax - if you get a bill seek advice from the Student Advice Centre.

If you are an external student it is likely that you will pay council tax as you are not attending University. If you are in this situation seek advice from The Student Advice Centre

What can I do if I have run out of money?

If your Government Student Loan is delayed the Student Advice Centre can offer a short term loan until your funding is paid. This is the only time that we are able to lend money.

We have the facility to give very small cash payments in a emergency.

For overseas students we can sometimes raise money from charitable trusts, if there is a small amount lacking and this would prevent you from finishing your degree.

How do I apply to the Access to Learning Fund?

You will only be eligible for the student support that would have been available at the beginning of the course.

What can I do if my house is in disrepair?

By law your landlord/agent must keep your property in good repair. This includes maintaining the quality of the structure; the facilities, the utilities supplies; and repairing and maintaining any appliances within the property like fridges, freezers, cookers, washing machines etc. They cannot carry out major improvements without your advance permission; charge you full rent if they are undertaking major renovations; come and go as they please (you should be given at least 24 hours prior notice); or charge you for repairs that are their responsibility.

To get repairs done, you need to contact the landlord in writing, clearly stating what repairs are needed. Give a reasonable time for the works to be done, eg: 24 hours emergency, 5 days for repairs affecting your comfort and enjoyment of the property. Make sure you keep a copy of the letter. If possible take photos of the problem so that you have proof it occurred should you need it at a later date. If you do not get a response from this communication, or are unhappy with the response, contact the Student Advice Centre and we will see if we can help.

Visit our page about disrepair for more information

My landlord has not returned my deposit, what can I do?

You pay a deposit so that the landlord/agent is not out of pocket if the property is left in a poor condition or the rent is not paid. Your deposit is a returnable sum. The landlord/agent has to show why they are keeping all or part of a deposit.

For example, if money is deducted for cleaning or damages, an invoice should be provided detailing the exact work and charges.

If you have not got all or some of your deposit back and you think you should have, or refute any deductions, write to the landlord/agent asking for the money to be returned within 14 days and explaining why you disagree with any deductions made. If you have photographs to prove the state of the house when you left, or records of any other work or damages throughout the year, you can include these with the letter to strengthen your case. If your letters do not get the required response, contact the Student Advice Centre and we will see if we can help in any way.

Visit our deposit page for more information

There is a limited supply of condoms and personal safety alarms, available from the metal cabinet located in the Student Advice Centre Info Area. There is also a supply of pregnancy tests, available at the Info Desk counter. A student card is required for this. UV pens for security marking your property are also available from the Info Desk.
