1. What is a Referendum?

  A referendum is a process that makes sure all members get their chance to have their say on the big issues that affect LUU members.  
     
 

Wikipedia Definition:

"A referendum is a direct vote in which an entire electorate is asked to either accept or reject a particular proposal. This may be the adoption of a new constitution, a constitutional amendment, a law, the recall of an elected official or simply a specific government policy. The referendum is a form of direct democracy."

 
     
     

2. What happens during a Referendum?

 
  There are a number of processes of the referendum which take place over approximately 1 month. The process involves submitting motions, discussing the proposed motions and voting on successful motions. For more information about each stage, click on the links below.

3. Who is involved in the Referendum?

 
  Any member can submit a 'motion' that proposes a change and any member can then vote on that motion.

  • 12/02/07– Deadline for motions to be submitted to Union Council
 
 
  • 14/02/07– Union Council open meeting to decide referendum agenda
 
 
  • 21/02/07– Deadline for anyone to submit a petition if Union Council rejected their motion
 
 
  • 26/02/07– Referendum agenda of motions published
 
 
  • 05/03/07– Debate Meeting
 
 
  • 05 - 08/03/07– Referendum Polling
 
 
  • 09/03/07– Referendum Count
