Theme C - Making University life easier for our Members
What this means:
- We provide a safe environment for our members.
- Our members are aware of steps they can take to ensure their own safety.
- Our members are better able to deal with debt.
To make this happen we will:
C 1. Make our members feel safer

Involved departments – Executive/Student Advice/DST/Security/Marketing/Student Activities
By July 2009
- We will have continued to implement the safety strategy .
- We will have cultural interpreters linked through volunteering, cultural and religious groups.
- In partnership with the University we will have reviewed and developed a Campus Watch initiative.
- Key student living areas will be part of neighbourhood watch schemes facilitated by UCRs and the Police.
- We will have integrated Unit 14:21 into the safety campaign .
As a result of this:
- The number of students who report feeling unsafe near where they live at night will have fallen below 5%.
- When surveyed key vulnerable groups will report increased feeling of reassurance about their personal safety.
By July 2010
- We will have raised the profile of the work we do on crime and safety.
- We will be fully integrated into partnerships in NW Leeds on issues of crime and safety.
- Our evening staff will have received regular training with up to date information about crime and safety initiatives.
As a result of this:
- 30% of members will be specifically be able to identify our campaign on safety.
- Safety will no longer be a weakness in the strategic review.
- West Yorkshire Police and Leeds City Council will have improved strategies relating to students and crime.
C 2. Help members manage debt

Involved departments – Executive/Student Advice/DST/Marketing/Joblink
By July 2009
- We will have continued to target information to those most concerned about debt.
- We will have developed the SKINT website and promoted the brand to ensure members have had access to the information they need to help them manage their money.
- We will have increased the number of students registered with Joblink and the number of opportunities available to them.
- Depending on outcome of SKINT fortnight we will have continued to provide “financial health checks”.
- We will have provided a range of opportunities for skills enhancement for our members based around the core skills sought by graduate recruiters and will have helped our members to recognize and develop from these skills.
As a result of this:
- Members will recognise that LUU is helping them to manage their money via SKINT, measured via a new question in the annual research.
- 25% of members will find suitable work through Joblink.
- 25% of members will be keeping up with their finances without difficulty.
- 60% of members will be keeping up with their finances, only struggling from time to time
By July 2010
- We will have lobbied the University to provide a better deal for all students regardless of their background.
- We will have in place a fully developed system to provide information and support to our current members and recent graduates on money issues.
As a result of this:
- Fewer than 25% of members surveyed will say they are concerned “a lot” about current debt.
- 25% will be keeping up with finances without difficulty.
- 25% will be keeping up with finances without difficulty
- 70% of members will be keeping up with their finances only struggling from time to time
