From Sunday 1st July 2007, to comply with the government's legislation, the Union building, like any other became smoke-free. Prior to this date, Leeds University Union was in discussions with the University and council planning authorities to agree designated smoking areas and shelters in the Union's bars and venues. Once planning permission for this was granted, these smoking areas were developed in time for the launch of the national smoking ban.
At Leeds University Union we have the advantage of having space on campus available to create proper smoking areas for our members. Many of the other bars and nightclubs in Leeds have limited or no space; their only solution being to create an area at their entrance that is not a great solution for smokers as well as non-smokers!
See the images below which show the designated smoking areas for LUU. All these areas are for our customers only.

This area includes a canopy roof over the smoking area and a 'perch' style bench with wall mounted cigarette disposal bins.
A barrier encloses the smoking area and is managed by the LUU security team, providing a safe environment for our members to smoke in.

New entrance doors replaced existing fire doors leading to a raised timber deck with picnic bench style seating, parasols and planters.
The new entrance doors also allow access at this level into the Old Bar for wheelchair users. There will be level access from the road into the smoking area to allow for wheelchair access. A new timber fencing/balustrading encloses the smoking area.

A barrier separates a designated smoking area on the already existing terrace area of Terrace bar. This area has picnic bench style seating, an umbrella canopy and upstanding cigarette disposal bins.
