Brown calls for World Class Education, NUS calls for World Class Funding - 4th November 2008

On Wednesday 5th November Leeds University Union, supported by the NUS, will be launching its fees campaign for the year: 'World Class Funding'.

This campaign calls for the government to increase higher education spending from 0.9 per cent of GDP to the OECD average of 1.1 per cent per GDP. With an Early Day Motion (EDM 2238) signed by 21 MPs already in parliament, and big plans for the year ahead, the aim is to make this one of the biggest student-led fees campaign in the region, if not the country.




Major Leeds student letting agents put to shame on BBC's Watchdog - 3rd November 2008

Monday 3rd November sees Providence Properties and Providence Lets, letting agents for student properties in Leeds, shamed on BBC's Watchdog for not returning students' deposit money.

LUU strikes gold! - 5th August 2008

LUU is extremely proud of being the first students' union in the country to achieve a Gold SUEI (Student Union Evaluation Initiative)award, the highest award possible for students' unions!

The assessment process is designed to help students' unions improve services and activities through continuous improvement. It covers all aspects of work from democracy and governance to financial management and communication. This is a fantastic achievement for LUU and recognises the hard work of its dedicated staff.



LUU is First for Equality and Diversity! - 11th June 2008

Leeds University Union has been awarded first prize for Equality and Diversity at the NUS Awards 2008 that was held in Birmingham on Monday 9th June. LUU was commended for incorporating equality and diversity within its structures and activities. Di Pedder, Diversity Champion at LUU, said: "It is recognition of all the work that we've put in to this area over the past 18 months to strengthen the diversity of our Union."

LUU also came 2nd in the HE Students' Union of the Year award, showing that we are rated amongst the best students' union in the country!

Please donations following the Chinese Earthquake... - 19th May 2008

As you all know, there was a massive earthquake in China on 12th May, in which more than 50,000 people may have died. Leeds Chinese Students and Scholars Association ask for your kind donation. Donation boxes will be located outside the entrance of LUU, Refec and Parkinson Building, 11am to 3pm until 21st May.

Money collected will transfer directly to the Chinese Education Development Foundation Sector and help rescue kids and students, rebuild schools and campuses, and help those caught in the earthquake. Alternatively, donate online on the Chinese embassy website.

How healthy is your wallet? - 19th May 2008

As part of LUU's Skint Fortnight (taking place Monday 2nd to Friday 13th June), the Student Advice Centre is holding Money Health Checks. These are running from Monday 2nd to Friday 6th June but you can book an appointment in advance at the Union's reception from Monday 19th May.

The appointments will take place in the Information Point and will include working out income and expenditure, and being provided with budgeting advice to minimise spending and maximise income!



We Love Hyde Park! - 8th May 2008

"Now the sun is finally here, the park's a great place to go. However, there are a couple of new things you should know...

The local police inspector has told us his officers will be enforcing the "no fires" bylaw, which includes BBQs. This means they may ask you to put your BBQ out or possibly even fine you. Also, litter has become a major issue. When you are leaving the park, think of others who want to enjoy it - bin your rubbish or take it home. Other than that, have a great summer!"

The Cake Bandit strikes! - 18th April 2008

A masked bandit stormed into the Union building on Thursday afternoon causing quite a commotion! The bandit attacked a stall, shouting and throwing cakes, to emphasise the fact that there are better ways to campaign on issues important to you than by just selling cakes. Look out for the Campaign Toolkit, an easy guide to effective campaigning, due out in May.

Last day to register! - 16th April 2008

Today is the last day to register to vote in the local elections for Leeds, taking place 1st May. These will decide who your local Councillors will be - these are the people who make decisions on everything in your area. If you don't register, you can't vote, which means you lose your say on local issues. Go to www.aboutmyvote.co.uk to register and find out more. If you live in University Residences you might already be registered, but you can check this on the website. You can also pick up a registration form from the Union's reception.

Voting Re-counts - 27th March 2008

Following the re-count of referendum Motion 5 that was proposed in February: Should our University refuse to accept money from military companies to carry out their research? The result remains the same and the motion still falls.

And in the recent Student Executive Elections, following three re-counts of the Equality and Diversity position, the original result remains with Maryam Ahmad being elected. Go to www.luuonline.com/elections for more information.



What a great term! - 13th March 2008

Friday 14th March is the last day of term. The Union building will be open over most of the Easter period with the exception of the bank holidays. The Union building will close 12.30pm Thursday 20th and re-open 8.30am Wednesday 26th March.

This has been one busy term! With events including: Health Week; International Cultural Week; the Referendum; Fairtrade Fortnight; the Elections; and preparations for the Summer Ball; we hope you have enjoyed it as much as we have!

Celebrate Week - the dates are announced! - 5th March 2008

Celebrate Week will be taking place the week commencing Monday 28th April. This week is a series of events to say a big 'thank you' to all our members involved in Leeds University Union whether it's with one of the 260 sports of societies, or with JCR committees of Union Council.

If you live on Hanover Square, Woodhouse Square, The Kendals, The Consorts, The Victorias, Clarendon Road, The Marlboroughs, purpose built student accommodation, Kelso Gardens or Kelso Court, your ideas are needed!

Little Woodhouse Community Association are drafting a Neighbourhood Design Statement and are running a session to get residents' views on how the area should look. As residents, your views are important! The session will be held Saturday 1st March, 10am-4pm at Swarthmore Education Centre, Woodhouse Square.

Help to improve access to the University building. - 15th February 2008

The University of Leeds has commissioned Capita Symonds to audit its campus and buildings to identify ways of improving access for people with disabilities.

Those with experience of the access barriers faced by disabled people are invited to attend a Pilot Audit so they can feed into, and be involved in, the audit process. The Pilot Audit will take place 11.30am Tuesday 19th February in the Electrical Engineering Building.

Re-Activate yourselves today! - 1st February 2008

Come along to the Re-Activate Fair taking place today in the Riley Smith Hall from 10.00am. If you are not already involved in a club or society, come along and check out all that's on offer. If you are already a member of a club or society, see what else you can try out. You do not have to sign up straight away; you could just try one of the taster sessions to see if you like it.


However, don't worry if you can't make the fair because 'It's easy' to join a club or society and you can do so at anytime throughout the year.




No cigarettes on sale this week! - 28th January 2008

From Monday 28th to Sunday 3rd February, Leeds University Union will NOT be selling any cigarettes in any of its shops and bars. Watch the short film explaining the reasons behind this ban and tell us what you think...

Sample a proper pasty... - 14th January 2008

The Proper Pasty Company team has been working round the clock to get the new unit (formally the Orange phone shop) ready for opening. They are now set up and will be opening at 11.00am today! They look forward to welcoming all students and staff over coming weeks to sample their goods.


From Tuesday 15th January, Proper Pasty Company will be open from 8.30am until 3.30pm.


From February, working in partnership with Proper Pasty, we will be the first students' union to be serving their Halal lamb and Halal chicken pasties.

Speak out Nationally! - 19th November 2007

Now's you chance to put forward a motion for change to the National Union of Students! You have the opportunity to influence and suggest our National policy and campaigns for the year 2008/9 so make the most of it! Get involved in a BIG project! - 15th November 2007

Susan Nash is working with the University on a project, looking into what support students get around personal development, and offer you an opportunity to be involved. The project will look into developing an online facility to help students show what they have learnt at uni that relates to employment, and take advantage of the opportunities on offer at Leeds.

Interested in representing LUU members at the NUS Extraordinary Conference? - 12th November 2007

On 4th December, NUS will be holding an Extraordinary Conference. It will be one of the most important in our history, with delegates from students' unions across the UK debating and voting on a new core constitution designed to shape NUS for the future.


If you are interested in standing for election to represent the members of LUU at this conference, find out all you need to know and download a nomination pack online. Nominations will close at 12.00noon Monday 19th November.

Vigil for Meredith - 7th November 2007

The University Chaplaincy have asked us to inform students that Meredith's friends and fellow students have arranged a procession that will begin at Leeds University Parkinson steps on Woodhouse Lane at 5.30pm which will pass the Union and proceed to the Tetley Gardens where a vigil will be held for students to lay flowers and sign a book of condolences.


Students affected by this issue can contact the Student Counselling Centre on 0113 343 4107, stucouns@adm.leeds.ac.uk or drop in to the Centre at 19 Clarendon Place. Students can also contact the Union Advice Centre.



The Referendum Union Council Meeting takes place today! - 5th November 2007

The Referendum Union Council Meeting takes place today at 6.00pm in the Riley Smith Hall. At this meeting, which is open to any members who wish to attend, the Union Council will consider all the motions that have been submitted. Any student can speak on any motion or amendment at the meeting but only councillors can vote.

The deadline for submitting amendments is now closed! - 1st November 2007

The deadline to submit any amendments to the proposed motions closed at 12.00noon today. Any member who wants to make an amendment now can only do so with the permission of the person who proposed the motion. In such a case the amendment must be presented in writing to the chair of Union Council before the start of the Union Council Meeting which takes place on Monday 5th November.

The deadline for motions for LUU referenda closed at 5.00pm on Thursday 25th October. See the five proposed motions online now!

If you want to submit an amendment to a proposed motion, submit in writing to Union Council via the Democracy Support Office. This can be done using the online form found at www.luuonline.com/referendum/amendmentsform. Make sure you submit your amendments by 12.00noon Thursday 1st November.

Do you have what it takes to be LUU's Returning Officer? - 15th October 2007

LUU is appointing a new Returning Officer for this year to make sure Union elections are run fairly and in-line with its rules. It's a voluntary position but will help you develop skills and experience in mediation, research, communication and decision-making. If you are interested email your name, student number and up to 100 words on why you want this role to election@luu.leeds.ac.uk by 4.00pm Monday 22nd October.


Applications will go to Union Council to vote on who will take this responsibility. For more information contact the Democracy Support Office.

Varsity 2007 - Leeds Met Carnegie vs University of Leeds - 12th October 2007

The third annual Varsity Day took place on Wednesday 10th October with representative teams of both universities competing in 23 sports.


It was an amazing day with hundreds of spectators coming up to support the teams in the fine weather, culminating in the grand finale Rugby Union match at Headingley Carnegie Stadium where 5,000 eager spectators including a very proud Vice Chancellor looked on as the two teams fought it out.

Varsity 2007 - Leeds Met Carnegie vs University of Leeds - 10th October 2007

The third annual Varsity Day takes place today with representative teams of both universities compete in 23 sports.

The day will conclude with the Men's Rugby Union fixture - always a closely fought game with each university having won one of the previous contests. This year, thanks to strong working partnerships with Leeds Carnegie RUFC, the standard is expected to be the highest yet, with a number of players representing both universities having won national honours for age-group squads.



A bumper crowd of spectators are expected to cheer on the sides with 2,000 advanced tickets already sold!

Anyone wanting to watch the rugby can still buy a ticket for £3 on the night - turnstiles are open in the south stand from 6.00pm, with the match kicking off at 7.15pm.



Let's get as many people down to support and cheer on the Uni! Friends, course-mates, housemates, everyone is welcome!

The results are in! - 11th May 2007

Following three days of voting, the results of the Union Council elections closed at 7.00pm Thursday 10th May. The count took place at 12 noon, in the ARC Lounge, Friday 11th May.


The Union Council By-Elections, to elect who will represent you for the academic year 2007 to 2008, received 65 paper votes and 310 e-votes giving a total of 376 votes cast.

UAR elections were available electronically only - 344 votes were cast. The Union Council by-election received 65 paper votes and 310 e-votes giving a total of 376 votes cast. The count is at 12 noon today in the ARC Lounge, upstairs in the Union building.

After a busy week of voting in Leeds University Unions Big Ballot Week, ballot stations closed yesterday. A grand total of 2,205 votes were cast! The count is being held in the Info Area (by the LUU reception) and will commence at 2.00pm today. Come along to witness the count and hear the results.

Following Union Council considering all motions submitted for the next LUU referendum a request has been made for a secure petition. A petition will be available at the Unions reception between 9.00am & 5.30pm and will close at 2.00pm on February 22nd. If the petition receives 330 student members signatures then the motion will be added to the referendum agenda. Referendum Update - 15th February 2007

Union Council met on Wednesday 14th February and debated long into the night the 10 motions that had been submitted for the referendum. In November 2006, we asked students to rate their landlord. Over 2000 responded and from this we have compiled a list of good landlords and noted the ones that students would not recommend. LUU Student Advice Centre have added to the list to show which landlords rarely cause concern. Building Improvements - 11th September 2006

Following the ‘The Review’, we listened to what our members said they wanted from the Union building and over the summer have been working to improve the look and feel, develop the services and offer more for your membership.

With the addition of two new shops, refurbishments to five of our existing areas we are certain students returning after the summer will be impressed by the changes to the Union and the new students will find everything they need to make the most out of their time at University.
