How the Union Works

Representation

With 33,000 members at Leeds University Union things could get a little mad and out of control so we have to have some order to ensure that everything is fair.

The structure of Leeds University Union is based around the members. They give their opinions, views and ideas to elected representatives who run the Union on the member's behalf.
If enough people agree with you view or idea it becomes Union Policy. If not, then the idea is deemed unrepresentative to the views held by the rest of the members.

The members who are in positions such as the Student Executive Officers or Union Councillors are here to make sure everybody's views and needs are heard and addressed in the correct manner. Without this structure the Union would not be able to function.

Assemblies are a group of like-minded people who meet informally on a regular basis to discuss specific topics and issues. Assemblies feedback and issues that have been raised by members to Union Council.

Course Representatives ensure that thier University department represents the needs of students so they receive the best possible education.

Student Executive Officers are voted in by you, the members, to represent the Union full-time. So from 9.00am to 5.00pm they are here to help.

Union Council is made up of 30 or so councillors who make sure the Union is doing everything you ask it to do. They decide on things like how much money we can spend to help our members, clubs and societies as well as run the day to day running of the Union. Union Councillors are elected members also voted in to their positions by their fellow members.

Union Academic Reps are members elected by their peers to represent students' learning and teaching issues at a faculty level.
