ISKCON (International Society for Krishna Consciousness)
p>ISKCON stands for International Society for Krishna Consciousness and represents an institutional setting (a 'church') of Vaisnavism, one of the three major religious traditions within Hinduism, whose name for God is Krishna or Vishnu. Vaisnavism is monotheistic and one of its best known scriptures in the west is the Bhagavad-Gita, which literally means 'The holy song of the Lord'. ISKCON members are usually known as Hare-Krishnas, because of their practice of chanting the holy names of God.
The ISKCON Society is open to all with an interest in Vaisnavism or Hinduism, and all its cultural aspects, especially its spirituality. We hold weekly Bhagavad-Gita discussion group meetings and fortnightly interactive sessions on issues related to spirituality, as well as organise various events throughout the academic year, such as the Gouranga Festival, mediation sessions, and vegetarian nights, among others.
