Political and Campaigning Groups

Liberty at Leeds

Liberty is one of the oldest human rights organisations and has been working since 1934 to protect civil liberties and promote human rights. It does this by lobbying parliament, exposing laws that undermine civil liberties and human rights, and works with politicians across the political spectrum to correct them.

Liberty challenge unjust laws by taking test cases to English and the European Courts. Although it receives vast support through the legal profession through Lawyers for Liberty, it is an independent membership organisation that anyone can join.

The Liberty at Leeds society seeks to raise awareness of Liberty and its campaigns by:

  • Holding events
  • Debates and discussions
  • Inviting speakers and holding conferences on relevant human rights issues.
  • Attending conferences and talks on relevant human rights issues.

Liberty at Leeds aims to become a base for those interested in human rights all over the North of England and seeks to cultivate links with other universities. Involvement with this society invites members to be part of an expanding project aimed at promoting the importance of civil liberties and human rights.
