Welcome to the History Society of 2008 - 2009! We hope that you have had a wonderful summer and are ready for the new academic year.
Many of you have already joined the society so we wanted to let you know what we will be providing in return for your £25! For those of you who have not yet joined, we hope that this introduction will clarify what we are about, and will sway your decision-making process!
Your payment of £25 on joining the society will give you full membership for your remaining time as a history student.
This year the society is expanding to welcome students from all disciplines, in order to add to the social side of the society, and to ensure that as many students as possible can benefit from our guest speaker events. We hope that this will help to promote history as an interest as well as an academic subject. In line with this, we will be organising trips to places of historical interest, such as as Prague, Amsterdam, Krakow. We will also organise the annual history society holiday, which in the past has included visits to cities such as Amsterdam, Prague and Krakow. You can keep up with what's going on via our Facebook group (Leeds University History Society) and the University's Student Portal.
Socials are a key part of the society's service as we appreciate that the limited number of contact hours makes getting to know fellow history students difficult. Socials will involve subsidised drinks/drinks deals and will progress on an almost weekly basis, culminating in the first term with the History Society Christmas Ball.
The Society has a range of sports teams including an 11-a-side and a 5-a-side football team and a women's netball team, all of which compete in University intra-mural leagues. If you are interested in joining an existing team or starting a new one please contact the relevant sports representative(girls contact Emily May Pierce: his6emp@leeds.ac.uk, boys contact Steve Enderby on his6s2e@leeds.ac.uk).
The History Society is run by students in their second and third years and changes hands every year. There are also opportunities for first years to get involved so, if you’re interested, feel free to get in touch! We are here to help and want to make this year as enjoyable and interesting for you as possible. If you have any queries do not hesitate to ask. The society is here to represent you!
