What is Jiu-Jitsu?

Jitsu is a martial art based on the traditional styles of Jiu-Jitsu that originated and developed in medieval Japan. The core of the art comprises a system of throws, joint locks and strikes. Based on the principal of using an aggressor's energy to their own disadvantage, Jitsu skills can be used by men, women and children to counter aggressive situations ranging from unwanted harassment to armed physical assault.

Who are we?

The Jitsu Foundation is an organisation with over a hundred clubs in the UK that teaches the modern and unique Shorinji Kan system of Jiu-Jitsu. With over 3000 active members and several hundred instructors – including specialists in modern sport forms, traditional forms, weapons training, First Aid and Shiatsu. Currently today the Jitsu Foundation is the largest single-style Jiu-Jitsu organisation in Britain.

Why learn Jiu-Jitsu?

Jitsu is a progressive martial art that offers a means of personal and physical development, as well as an effective system of self-defence. Regular training can help improve strength, fitness, flexibility, co-ordination and posture. Moreover, most people find over time that Jitsu improves their self-esteem and self-confidence. Advanced training levels are highly challenging and foster exceptional levels of physical and mental control.

Jitsu training is also a great fun and a fantastic way to meet new friends. Most clubs within The Jitsu Foundation offer a vibrant social life out of club training, with events organised throughout the year. Jitsu has a BUSA recognised sport form and clubs also take part in regional, national and international courses and competitions.

Beginners always welcome.

The best way to find out more about Jitsu is to come along to your local club and join in – beginners are always welcome and the first session is free. You can find out more detail about our club at www.leedsjitsu.co.uk

Even our instructors were novices once, and we understand that starting a martial art can be daunting. Our aim is to provide a friendly club environment where people can progress at their own pace. Don't worry if you are not at the peak of fitness before you join. All you need to start is some loose clothing and a willingness to learn. Bring a friend along too if you like!
