LUU Tibet Society aims to create more awareness of the 'Tibet Issue'.
We the Tibet Society believe that in 1949, China invaded ethnically Tibetan areas and then proceeded to occupy Tibet, previously an independent sovereign state. In March 1959, Tibet's religious leader fled Tibet to exile in India and has subsequently been followed by huge numbers of refugees. Post-1959, the Chinese government has attempted to assimilate Tibet and it's distinct culture into Chinese society, and has launched attacks on Tibet's religion and culture, with an estimated 1.2 million Tibetans killed along the way. Human rights abuse continues to this day and Tibet's environment has been ravished. LUU Tibet Soc aims to bring awareness to the human rights and environmental abuses occurring in Tibet through expressing solidarity for Tibetan people and the government of His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, the true leader of Tibet. Meetings take place weekly in Semesters 1 & 2, and are aimed not solely at campaigning, but also creating better understanding and appreciation of Tibet's rich culture and history.
