What's On

30th May 2008

The Official Leeds Universities' Summer Ball 2008
Location: Lotherton Hall
6.00pm to 6.00am

9,000 students will descend upon the lush green field site in the grounds of the Lotherton Hall estate on Friday 30th May for a 12 hour black-tie celebration of the end of the academic year and for some, the end of Uni life altogether. With attendance from Leeds Metropolitan University, Leeds College of Art and Design, Trinity and All Saints, Leeds College of Music in addition to students from the University of Leeds, The Summer Ball is certain to hold on to its title of the largest student only event of its kind in the UK.

The site for Leeds Universities’ Summer Ball 2008 has expanded to make room for an unprecedented seven arenas at Lotherton Hall, each with its own distinct music policy:

The Fruity Arena welcomes to the stage ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena, now a well-established solo artist with debut album Real Girl and a collaboration with Groove Armada under her belt. Joining her will be Booty Luv live, proving why they are among the hottest dance acts in the UK charts right now, with recent successes including their version of Boogie 2Nite and their self-penned Some Kinda Rush.

The Tunnel Club Arena features DJ sets from Dirty Pretty Things’ main man Carl Barat and Bloc Party’s Russell Lissack, recent remixer of Kate Nash’s Pumpkin Soup. Barat has been pent up working on his band’s second album in the studio, so no doubt you can expect a debauched display worthy of an ex-Libertine. As a co-founder of Bloc Party, Russell Lissack is part of one of the UK’s most important guitar acts, winning multiple album of the year awards for both Silent Alarm and A Weekend In The City.

The Urban Arena is happy to see the return of Leeds favourite, Trevor Nelson. A guaranteed crowd pleaser, it wouldn’t be The Summer Ball without him. As the evening progresses so does the music in this arena, with breaks and beats duo The Freestylers taking to the decks, and drum and bass from the legendary Roni Size and MC Dynamite.

The Wax:On Arena showcases this brand’s mixture of electro, house and techno, with headline sets coming from UNKLE main man James Lavelle, Southern Fried Records' Touché, and upfront electro upstarts the Riotous Rockers aided by the more than capable Wax:On resident DJs and VJs.

The Mn2s Arena features a stellar line up of the finest house DJs known to man with Z Records head honcho Joey Negro (he of Make A Move On Me and American Dream fame) making an appearance. Production/ DJ duo Liquid People, exponents of banging beautiful house music at its best are also on the bill. Joining them is Ministry of Sound and Space, Ibiza resident Dan Tait, recently voted in the top 10 VJs worldwide by Mixmag.

The HiFi Club vs. Brighton Beach Arena is just exactly that. With resident DJs from these two Leeds institutions playing sets of the greatest soul and guitar music from the 60s onwards, it’s up to you to decide the winner.

The Unit 1421 Arena is a break from all of the above, should you need it. Take it easy in the sofa lounge, amuse yourself at the casino, charge up your phone and recharge your batteries here. This is a 12 hour event remember!

In addition to all this, we have a free fun fair and many other attractions, plenty of bars (including a pre-ordered wine speed bar), food stalls, and professional photographers to capture the moment forever so we can cater for your every need on 30th May.
