I am a University of Leeds Student dependant; can I join LUU and have the opportunity to get a job within your union?

Response:

I am afraid that you cannot join the Union, we are here to support students of the University but you are very welcome to apply for any jobs that we have here.

Please go to www.luuonline.com/employment and then click on current vacancies.  All the part time jobs in LUU are advertised through Joblink.  Please see www.luuonline.com/joblink.  LUU is a fantastic place to work but there are other great employers in Leeds who may have jobs that meet your needs.  Here are some other sources of jobs:

www.leeds.ac.uk/about/jobs for all positions in the University

www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk for position in Leeds and West Yorkshire - this is the main job centre provided by the Government. The Yorkshire Evening Post newspaper advertises jobs in their paper on a Thursday.  It may also be worth approaching employers in your local community, shops, restaurants etc.

I really want to get involved with the Irish dancing society in Leeds, but I have already emailed them twice (with the email address I found on this website) and have had no reply.  I'm a dance student from Bretton Hall and so it's not as easy for me to go looking for them in the Union and I wouldn't know where to find them anyway!  If you could send me any further details to contact them then I would be grateful.  Thanks.

Response:

The president of the Irish Dancing soc is Chantelle, her email address is the same as the one shown on the web page – mat4cdmc@leeds.ac.uk so we will email Chantelle to prompt her for a reply.  Additional information is that the Irish Dancing Society meets on a Wednesday in Pulse between 16:00 – 20:00hrs.  I hope this helps.

As a disability services personal assistant I attend the Union regularly with my student and have found that the lift from stylus to mine and also the stylus dance floor lift have broken down several times as a result of this disabled students are unable to access the facilities available.

Response:

We do apologise that you are having difficulty with the lifts within the Union building and this has spoiled your enjoyment.

All our lifts are under a University contract for servicing and repairs. Within this contract once a fault is reported essential/ disabled lifts are classified as an immediate priority call out. If the fault can be repaired it is, but the problem comes when new parts have to be ordered this does lengthen the time it takes to repair the fault. When this happens we are in daily contact with the University in trying to ensure the repair is completed as soon as possible.

The lifts mentioned have both been repaired, but unfortunately within a couple of days another fault has occurred. We are presently reviewing the accessibility to Mine and are exploring the possibility of a secondary lift.

Again we do apologise and I hope the above explains how the Union is trying to resolve the faulty lift as quickly as possible.

There are far too little indoor seating areas to use in the union building for lunch. Every day I have to sit outside in the cold because my lecturers always go over the hour; resulting in me being late to buy dinner and get a space inside. I'm fed up of my lunch always being cold. I suggest a proposal of more indoor seating somewhere, especially in winter.

Response:

Thanks for your feedback about seating.  We have a few different lounge areas in the Union, where you are not obliged to buy food or drink, you may not be aware of them all, so firstly let me outline them.

Lounge 1 - Purple seating in the 'Info Point' in the main foyer area of the Union.

Lounge 2 - On the lower retail floor in 'Game On' behind Extras.

Lounge 3 - On the lower retail floor, continue straight on past Essentials turn right before the entrance to Mine.

Lounge 4 - Student Resource Lounge in the Arc of the first floor of the Union.

Lounge 5 - On the lower retail floor opposite Union Books

If you're not sure about the location of these areas please ask at the main reception in the Union and they will be happy to direct you. I'm aware that signage to these areas is currently very poor; however, we now have the funds to increase the signs all around the Union over the summer 2007.

I'm also aware that this is not adequate seating for everyone of our Union members, however we only have a limited amount of space and a number of services and activities we need to operate. Lack of seating is something that other members have feedback to us before and over the last few years we have introduced most of the seating areas mentioned above.  We are looking into the possibility of creating more seating space over the summer, keep an eye on our website (luuonline.com) and 'The Gist' for more information.

I hope this helps to keep you and your lunch warmer!

I am writing this e-mail because I think and so does many other students, that the process for selecting the football teams "has many things wrong with it".  One thing that is wrong with the process is that the captain picks his friends (many of whom comparatively to the other players are average).  Apart from the fact that the captain picking his average friends, the main thing I am most upset about - is that he accepts the £5 trail fee; then be bias in selecting the teams.

So I suggest that someone should look at this issue and make sure the process of selecting teams are not left down to "full of themselves"   morons

Response:

Many thanks for your comments about the trial system implemented by the Men’s Football club. I have passed on your comments to the club and when we plan the process for 2007-08 we will try to ensure things operate in as fair a way as possible.

Having observed two days of the trials process this year, I have to say that I was happy with the way the club conducted themselves. The process is very difficult, given the large number of trialists (over 300 students) needing to be accommodated over a short space of time. I felt they did this very well – with everyone appearing to be given a chance to sign up for a particular trial match and play a full game. The £5 cost goes towards pitch hire and the purchase of shirts/bibs & equipment for the trials.

A wide range of 1st team players, club committee members, team coaches and external representatives all had an input in the selection of squads – rather than just one of two individuals. Also existing players were required to take part in the final trials – ensuring that they weren’t just automatically picked because of their role the previous year.

To back up the fact the process was fair and just, the performance of the all four University teams in the British Universities (BUSA) leagues has been impressive. The men’s 1st team have finished in second place in their BUSA league this season, having been promoted last season. The 3rd team won their league and have qualified to the national knockouts.  In addition, the 2nd team finished 3rd in their league and the 4th team were 2nd.

I hope that goes someway to addressing your concerns about the process – if you require any further information or have suggestions on how we can improve matters for 2007/08 please feel free to get in touch.

LUU's website is littered with errors.  Most of the errors are incorrect use of apostrophes (it should be LUU's members' views, NOT member's views). Just to highlight this:  There are errors in at least half of the blurbs about the members of the exec.

I know that lots of people probably don't notice, and in the great scheme of things punctuation is a minor issue, but it does make me wonder if anyone is even reading things over before sticking it on your website.  In fact, there is also at least one error on your display in the union lobby.  It really doesn't look very good if an academic institution can't punctuate.  If you need a sub-editor I'd be happy to do it!

Response:

Thanks for your feedback. We are continually looking for ways to improve and develop the website so any comments you provide are greatly appreciated.

I have taken your comments on board and do consider grammar and punctuation to be an important issue - accuracy is essential if members are to trust the information we are providing. We make an effort to proof copy on the website as well as all other documents and publications that we produce, however, due to limited resources, time restraints and the fast moving nature of our work, mistakes do sometimes go unnoticed.

I would like to apologise for the errors that you have noticed and will make a concerted effort to go through the site making amendments where appropriate and take more care to avoid errors in information that goes onto the site in future. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact me highlighting those you have noticed and I will be sure to correct these. Alternatively, you can also contact us if you are interested in doing some proofreading for the department on a voluntary basis.

I hope this will not deter you from using the website in the future and please continue to contact us with any further comments you may have.

I am a postgrad student who hardly ever uses the Union. I recently decided that I should make more use of the major facilities (ie the bars!) but then I remembered why I have never visited before. I am unsure whether I could bring my husband in with me, who is not a student? If this isn't allowed, may I suggest that this might prevent students with partners making full use of the facilities to which they are entitled. I spend most of my time with my husband so if he couldn't come into the union I would hardly ever get chance to use it. There must be many others in the same situation who are effectively excluded from all the fun?

Response:

Thanks for your feedback about usage of the Union.  I'm pleased to tell you that you are very welcome to bring your husband into the Union to use any of the bars, shops, cafes and food outlets.  You are also welcome to bring other friends and family who may not be students any time of the day or night.  The only services in the Union that are only for student members are the membership services such as the Advice Centre and the Clubs and Societies.

I'm pleased that you told us this information, as we obviously don't make it clear or welcoming enough for non-students. I have recently conducted focus groups with other postgraduates, mature students and part time students, and they have said similar things to you.  We are going to start communicating which services as accessible to whom very shortly, so hopefully this will help students like yourself.

Thanks for your feedback - keep your suggestions coming.

Suggestion:

Can you start selling soy products for example yoghurt? Also can you sell sports bars for post gym nutrition? Can you sell Complan as well?

Response:

Some interesting suggestions here, these products are not readily available to us at the moment but we are going to a major trade show next month and will see what we can source.

Suggestion:

I think it would be a good idea to provide cubicled showers in the Cromer terrace gym. I don't think anyone really wants to use communal showers, especially when they're not separated from the toilets. This change would encourage more people to use the gym, and make it better for those who use it for exercise classes etc.

Response:

Cromer Terrace is a University facility and not under the direct control of the Union, so we can pass this feedback on to the Sport and Physical Education Department but not much else.

I know that there are plans for the redevelopment of many of the University's sporting facilities. You can find details of these on their website: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/sport/pages/facilities/facdev.htm
